The Compact and Smart Apple Ibook G3

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

When Apple first launched the Apple iBook G3 in July of 1999, the world saw a change. Available in different colors and for the first time there was a laptop with a trendy and sporting look that became instantly popular with the youth. The five colors of the apple iBook was Tangerine, Blueberry, Graphite, Indigo and Key Lime.

Two different versions of the G3 were launched in a period of 3 years. The Apple iBook G3 clamshell was launched in 1999 was aimed at children and basically the youth. With an innovative, child-like design, the iBook G3 clamshell is more than just a small notebook; it is a powerful computing machine. The main component of this iBook is the PowerPC G3 CPU. This is a third generation PowerPC microprocessor that belongs to the PowerPC 750 family.

The standard components of the Apple iBook G3 clamshell included Ethernet, USM, modem ports and an optical drive. Codenamed as P1, running on 366MHz M2453, it has a 12.1″ TFT (Thin Film Transistor) that provides 800×600 resolution. The G3 is available with RAM of 32MB or 64MB; Hard Disk space of 3.2GB or 6GB; VRAM of 4MB and 2X AGP ATI Rage Mobility graphics. Another salient point of the G3 is that they were the first to be sold with integrated wireless networking. Even today, there is no other notebook that can be compared to the G3 clamshell in performance as well as advanced technology for the children’s segment of the market.

The second G3 model was the Apple iBook G3 dual USB, which was launched in the May of 2001. Unlike its predecessor, the dual USB model was devoid of any theatricals and was aimed at a more technology driven and serious market. Weighing at 2.2kg, G3 dual USB is available with RAM of 64MB or 128 MB; hard disk space of 10GB; a 256KB L2 cache; and a 12.1″ TFT (Thin Film Transistor) display that provides a maximum resolution of 1024×768. The iBook is powered by PowerPC G3 500 MHz and has the regular features like Ethernet, USB 1.1, Video Out, FireWire, AirPort (802.11b) and optical drive consisting of a CD/CDRW/DVD/Combo. This is one of the first notebooks to have a dual optical drive. The operating system is Mac OS 9.1.

There were some more versions of the Apple iBook G3 taken out later like the iBook G3 Dual USB with 600MHz and 15GB hard disk; the G3 14″ TFT with a maximum resolution of 1024×76; the 700MHz G3 in 2002; the 900MHz G3 in 2003 with 40GB hard disk are some of the many different configurations that came out in the market. The truth is that at the end of the day, there is no other notebook as sturdy, as strong in performance, as durable as the Apple G3 iBook and it shows!

What Are the Hardware Differences Between Vodafone’s Mobile BroadBand Products?

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

The range of Mobile Broadband (Mobile BB) devices is an ever evolving market, with manufacturers and networks aiming to outperform and outclass opponents. The purpose of this article is to provide you, the buyer with an overview of the different products on the market that would function with Vodafone’s latest range of Mobile BB tariffs.

I have detailed the products in order of their industry release, all products are compatible with Vodafone’s GPRS, 3G & HSDPA mobile data networks in the UK;

Vodafone Data Card
The classic data card has been on the market via Vodafone and alternative suppliers for many years, typically this card will be inserted into the TYPEII (or PCMCIA interface) in the user’s laptop, following the installation of the manufacturers supplied software. Once installed the card, powered by the laptop, provides wireless functionality to connect to Vodafone’s GPRS, 3G or HSDPA data network. The recent replacement to the original style data card is commonly known as the BroadBand Express Card, providing the same functionality as above but inserts into the newer Express Card slot in more recently produced laptops, however to provide backward compatibility the card comes with an adapter allowing insertion into the TYPEII (or PCMCIA) slot.

Vodafone USB Modem
Providing the same functionality as a data card the USB modem provides the additional benefit and flexibility of connection via the laptop (or desktop PC) USB slot. The device is attached or connected to a cable of approximately 15cm in length to which the USB connector is on the end. This device provides network connectivity to Vodafone’s GPRS, 3G, and HSDPA network.

Vodafone USB Stick Modem
The latest introduction to the fleet of products is the USB stick modem, again as per the above product the USB modem this provides the same functionality but does away with small 15cm USB cable connection. The USB stick modem is simply inserted directly into the laptop in the same fashion as a USB memory stick or flash drive. This is currently the preferred selection.

I am now in my 10th year working within the mobile voice and data communications industry. Having successfully worked with and advised a large number of local, SME and key corporate clients around the UK.

First Computer - How Did You Get Started?

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

In 1982, I decided to become adept at Morse Code. I can’t even remember why now. So I went to the local Heathkit Store (an old version of Radio Shack) in Berkeley, CA and invested in a Morse Code key kit. With a little soldering and wiring, I built a replica of a code key to tap out Morse Code.

While at the store I noticed a newfangled piece of equipment called a “Portable Computer”. The following week I returned to the store to really check out this new piece of equipment. I was both excited and mystified by the box that was the size of an old Singer sewing machine, had a 5″ built-in monitor (white on black) and two 32kb floppy drives and 64k of memory.

Oh yeah, it was portable - if you call lugging around 25 pounds portable.

Here was the ultimate in computer technology - THE OSBORNE COMPUTER - with it’s CPM operating system, 5 1/4 floppy drives(2), tiny monitor, tilt out keyboard and with an attached handle for carrying if you were strong enough. And it came bundled with ALL the software you could ever want or need:

WORDSTAR - Word processing software with Mail/Merge

SUPERCALC - Spreadsheet that could do math

DB - The ultimate Database

And all of the above software came with their corresponding 500 page manuals. WOW - what else could anyone need? Oh yeah, price in 1982 was a mere $1800 and believeme, that’s a lot of monthly payments.

Check this out - Start operating system(CPM) in A: drive - use B: drive for data

Swap out CPM floppy for Program in A: drive - switch B: floppy for data

ETC, ETC, ETC…

After a month or so of exploring and reading the Osborne Magazine “The Portable Companion”, I bought and upgraded the floppy drives from 32kb to 64kb each and even bought a modem to chat online with other Osbornites.

Anyway, to wrap this up for now - I took the “portable” computer to work and entered the Companies customer list so we could sort by name, address, zip, etc and set up the first mailing list available on computer. The Company was so impressed they spent $650 for a dot matrix printer so they could do mailing labels.

It was definitely a miracle device for the times.

This was not entered on the Osborne Portable Computer - although I still have it on the worktable and it still functions as designed.

Cable Modem Tweaks - Boost Your Connection Free

Sunday, July 20th, 2008

Don’t you find it annoying that whenever you are in a middle of research or online surfing, the connection suddenly stops? If you’ve experienced that a number of times, perhaps the problem might lie with the cable modem. And what you can do perform a few tweaks on the cable modem in order to optimize its operation.

Say the cable modem on your computer gets disconnected after a few minutes, then here’s a cable modem tweak that can help you address the issue. One reason this thing happens in your computer is that this is Windows XP-related. On the Windows XP, there is an option that allows the computer to turn off the USB device in order to save on power. Now what you can do is to disable this option. Just click on the start button and highlight the My Computer icon and select the option that says properties. A window will then appear with the system properties. Navigate the window by clicking on the hardware tab and press the device manager button. Expand the serial bus controllers and double click on the USB root hub. You’ll now see the Power Management tab and uncheck the ‘allow the computer to turn off the device to save power’. If the computer displays a number of USB root hub, then make sure that you repeat the same steps for that same number of hubs. Often a cable modem that disconnects after a few hours can be remedied by performing these two steps. One cable modem tweak that is possible is by disabling the hibernation. You can right click on the desktop and click the screen saver tab. You’ll notice the power button of the display properties dialog. Click that one. Another dialog box will appear and you’ll be shown the hibernate tab. Use this box to uncheck the box beside the enable hibernation. Another good step is to disable the Windows Messenger. On the start button, select run and input the words gpedit.msc. Proceed to the Computer Configuration then select the Administrative Templates, then straight to Windows Components and on to Windows Messenger. Don’t run the messenger, just go to the properties and check the box near it to enable.

Another thing that computer users can do is to configure the modem delay time. This is true usually to Motorola and Rockwell modems. And this issue always happens right after the user has installed the Windows 2000 drivers on the XP Pro. In order to address the problem, here’s a little tweak that you can do. But as a precaution, make sure that you back up your registry even if there will be no problems. Again, click on the run and type the words ‘regedit’. Then you have to select the HKEY current user/remote access/profile/”your isp”. Then you to need to change the value of the disconnect idle time from 14 to zero. Following these simple steps can address the issue of internet disconnection every few hours. For a specific cable modem tweak, then a talk with the technical representative of the company can bring results.
